Water Sports in Little Elm: Everything You Need to Know

Some people love just enjoying the beauty of a lake – but if you’re craving more of a thrill, water sports may be right for you! Whether you just want to relax in a tube or ride a wakeboard, there’s something for everyone. Today, the experts at Cottonwood Creek Marina will walk you through everything you need to know about water sports in Little Elm.

The Different Types of Lake Water Sports on Lake Lewisville

When it comes to recreational water sports – especially on lakes like Lake Lewisville – you have five main activities to choose from:

  • Water tubing: Water tubing is the easiest and most accessible water sport. All you have to do is hop in a tube, attach it to a powered watercraft (like a motor boat, pontoon, or tritoon), and let the boat tow you in its wake!
  • Water skiing: Water skiing is similar to regular skiing, but instead of gliding down a snowy mountain, you skim over the water’s surface while attached to a boat with a cable.
  • Wakeboarding: Wakeboarding is a popular water sport where a rider stands on a board that is being towed behind a boat. Lake wakeboards come with boots or some other form of foot attachment to keep riders from falling off. You may even catch the Lake Lewisville wakeboarding pros showing off with tricks and flips!
  • Knee boarding: Knee boarding is a less intense version of wakeboarding, perfect for beginners and kids. When you kneeboard, you kneel on a small, padded board while a boat tows you.

Wakesurfing: A spectacular alternative to wakeboarding. Let’s talk a little more about it…

What’s the Difference Between Wakeboarding on Lake Lewisville and Wake Surfing?

The key difference between wakeboarding on a lake and wake surfing is the lack of connection to a boat. Think of wake surfing as wakeboarding’s thrill-seeking cousin. While wakeboarders are towed behind a vessel with a cable, wake surfers ride the wake independently, staying close to the boat without being physically attached to it.

This freedom allows wake surfers to do even more impressive aerial tricks. However, it also makes wake surfing much more difficult than wakeboarding. If you want to try wake surfing, get a lot of wakeboarding experience first.

Meet Carter: Little Elm’s Wakesurfing Expert

Carter is Little Elm’s wakesurfing expert. After years of visiting Cottonwood Creek Marina with his family, Carter got his start in water sports with lake wakeboarding. He picked it up fast, and by the time he was 14, he had graduated to wake surfing.

Now, Carter has been a competitive wake surfer for three years. His accomplishments have taken him all over the US, garnering first place in a competition in Minnesota and an impressive second place finish at the World Wake Surfing Championships in Florida!

Little Elm wakeboarding enthusiasts can look up to Carter, and they can even visit him at Cottonwood Creek Marina. Carter values his years of training on Lake Lewisville, and as soon as he was 15, he headed right down to Cottonwood Creek Marina to join our team of boating experts!

What is the World Wake Surfing Championship?

The World Wake Surfing Championship is a culmination of The World Series of Wake Surfing, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. Wakesurfers from around the world compete in Winter Haven, Florida for global recognition in the sport. The World Series of Wake Surfing takes place throughout the year at various tour stops, and the championship led to athletes being pulled by a 2026 Centurion Ri230 with a Predator Power Tower (PPT). The 2025 edition was the 29th annual Wake Surfing Championship.
