Seaplane Makes Unexpected Stop at Lake Lewisville Marina

Typically, Lake Lewisville is home to boaters, fishermen, and families who enjoy a beautiful day out on the lake. But sometimes the lake brings surprises, such as a yellow seaplane landing on Lake Lewisville right outside Cottonwood Creek Marina in Little Elm, Texas.

At first, the marina dockhands thought the pilot might be practicing a routine water landing. But then, curiously, the phone rang, and the pilot was on the other end.

A Float Plane Unexpectedly Lands on Lake Lewisville

This unique experience was recounted by Conor McKenna, a team member at Cottonwood Creek Marina, who witnessed the story unfold firsthand.

At first, when the float plane landed on the lake, everyone reacted with curiosity and excitement. Seaplanes aren’t a typical occurrence in northern Texas. So when the pilot called in from inside the plane, it was all hands on deck.

The pilot had explained that the aircraft had run low on fuel and asked if he could bring the plane over to the marina’s gas dock. Cottonwood Creek Marina staff quickly agreed and prepared to take action and help where they could.

The float plane slowly taxied across the water, arriving right alongside the fuel dock— a new experience for everyone involved.

Dockhands Help Refuel the Seaplane

There were two people aboard the aircraft: the pilot and a student pilot.

Once the plane reached the dock, the marina team helped guide it safely into position. The seaplane was strategically turned around, secured at the dock, and refueled. Both the dockhands and the pilot agreed that this experience was a first.

Cottonwood Creek Marina regularly fuels boats, but refueling a plane at the marina gas dock was something that hadn’t been expected. After fueling up, the pilot restarted the aircraft, taxied back out onto the water, and successfully took off from Lake Lewisville.

Can You Land a Seaplane on Any Lake?

This unique experience posed a question many people have when they see seaplanes landing on water: Can you land on any lake with a seaplane?

The answer depends on a variety of factors.

Seaplane pilots must consider:

  • Local regulations and airspace rules
  • Water traffic and safety conditions
  • Wind direction and wave conditions
  • Adequate open water for landing and takeoff

While seaplanes are designed to land on water, pilots still need to carefully evaluate whether a lake is safe and legal for landing.

Across the United States, seaplane training helps pilots learn the specialized skills needed to take off and land from lakes, rivers, and coastal waters.

A Memorable Day at Cottonwood Creek Marina

A few days later, the pilot contacted the marina to thank the team for the help and asked if the marina had photos of the event to commemorate their shared, unique experience.
